This is a prototype of Brush's arc lamp used to light Cleveland's Public Square. This was the first American electric streetlighting.
The round sphere near top left in the photo was a frosted glass globe mounted aroung the arc to diffuse the light so it was not just a very bright spot when you looked at it.
