It is actually a water-evaporation-cooled refrigeration system. Since Telling was a dairyman familiar with such systems, it was natural for him to adapt this system to cool his house. It did not contain any mechanical heat exchanger; heat removal was achieved by spraying cold water through a series of baffles (referred to as a swamp cooler).
